What is Hypnobirthing ?

Hypnobirthing has grown quickly over the last ten years due to the success that women have had using the method for childbirth. These women told their friends and over recent years it has become widely accepted as an effective form of antenatal preparation. The word ‘hypno’ gives the impression of a tree-hugging hippie; this is far removed from the reality of Hypnobirthing. The female body is perfectly designed to bear and birth children in healthy women of childbearing age. However, our culture has given us the expectation that childbirth is painful and something to fear and that our bodies cannot achieve birth without the help of the medical profession. Hypnobirthing is a method of releasing those fears and providing tools to empower you to birth efficiently and comfortably. Breathing, deep relaxation and visualisation combined with positive thought and language reduces stress, fatigue, anxiety and fear; this therefore increases the production of positive birth hormones, reduces pain and expedites labour.

The father’s role in Hypnobirthing provides him with specific tasks that enable him to fulfill his vital part in the birth of his child, bringing the couple closer together and encouraging a deeper relationship with his newborn baby. During the course you will be provided with the information you need to make informed choices in labour and understand how your body works. This will enable you to work with your healthcare professionals to achieve the birth you want. (Katharine Graves 2013)

Hypnobirthing teaches you how to create and work with a more positive cycle:

The cycle of fear creating adrenalin which has a negative impact on birth and tenses the uterus, thereby creating pain, is what hypnobirthing strives to break.

This is achieved by learning how to work with the birth hormones: oxytocin, endorphins, melatonin, prolactin and adrenaline.
